I worked as a developer at Amazon back in the 90s. During the holidays, it was an all-hands-on-deck situation, and we were all expected to either help out in the warehouse (to make sure people got their gifts on time) or help out in customer service. I opted to help out folks in customer service, which meant dealing with customer emails.

I was surprised to find that at Amazon, all customer service representatives were Emacs users, if they knew it or not. They all had X-terminals connected to a centralized mail processing host which ran Digital UNIX. One of the great engineering minds of the early Amazon days, a guy named Shel Kaphan, wrote some mail processing software in C called ‘Mailman’ (not to be confused with GNU Mailman) and folks on the Customer Service team wrote a front-end for it in Emacs-lisp, and that’s what everyone used.

Steve Yegge tells a story about being at a party with ex-Amazon old-timers who would go on and on about how much they miss Mailman (and Emacs) and how cool it was. Not everyone loved it though, there was this guy Michael Daisey who had a one-man show about his time at Amazon, and complained bitterly about having to learn software that is used by nobody else in the industry.
